Anambra Court Frees Three Murder Suspects, Sentences One To 21 years imprisonment.

An Onitsha High court, Anambra State on Tuesday discharged and acquitted three persons, Wilfred Ezike Mgbiligba, Chosom Amakaeze and Paul Anozie and sentenced one Sunday Emenike to 21 years imprisonment for the murder of Akachukwu Ezebuilo.

Tribune Online gathered that the four who were arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy and murder were during the trial accused of the murder of Akachukwu Ezebuilo at No. 1, Zik’s Avenue, Fegge Onitsha on 10th September 2018.

According to the charge they were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder of Akachukwu Ezebuilo and another two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted murder of Nnamdi Obumse.

The four had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges claiming that they were not at the scene of the incident on a fateful day.

Delivering the judgment, Justice S.N. Odili said the trio of Wilfred Ezike Mgbiligba, Chisom Amakaeze and Paul Anozie, proved beyond reasonable doubt that they were not involved and present in the murder of the deceased on the day in question.

He, however, did not exonerate Sunday Emenike from involvement in the conspiracy and attempted murder of Nnamdi Obumse, saying his defence statement was not able to convince the court of non-involvement.

“I am convinced from what he told the court that he was involved in the conspiracy and attempted murder of Nnamdi Obumse.

“It has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was involved and I hereby sentence him to four years imprisonment for conspiracy and 21 years for the attempted murder of Nnamdi Obumse. The sentences are to run concurrently,” the judge said.

Pleading for mercy, counsel to the convict, Barr. K. K. Oguejiofor said that the convict was a first offender and had conducted himself orderly throughout the four years he was in detention.

The lead counsel to the accused, Barr. Chuma Oguejiofor had in his contribution said that he was happy that his friend, Wilfred Ezike Mgbiligba, has been set free.

Commending the judge, other defend counsels and plaintiff counsels, he however posited that they may head to Appeal court after going through the certified true copy of the judgment sheet to get a better judgment for the convicted Sunday Emenike.

Also, two other counsels for the defendants, Barristers Emmanuel Ezemenari and Lawrence Ndukaihe, said that they were 11 accused persons out of which seven were earlier discharged and acquitted for want of evidence.

“We may appeal the judgment after studying it to give better judgment to Sunday Emenike.”

Commending the judge for a job well done, the counsel to the plaintiffs, Barr Gozie Obi, said that, “it was a well-deserved judgment for the convict.

“He is a danger to society, he should go in for the crime he committed.

“He was arrested at Awkuzu SARS while he was facing another crime that investigation was going on.”

The fire Out break at Abuja.

There has been a fire outbreak at the ministry of finance building in the federal capital territory (FCT).

Black smoke was seen billowing from a part of the building which is located at the Central Business District of Abuja on Wednesday.

It is not yet certain what led to the fire.

But TheCable learnt the fire was put out and that it did not affect a major part of the building.

The fire outbreak is just the latest of many that have affected government offices in Abuja.

In May 2020, fire burnt a part of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) building in the FCT.

A month before that incident, a building housing the office of the accountant-general of the federation (AGF) was gutted by fire.

In 2018, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) said Nigeria lost about N5 trillion to fire incidents in four years.

*ST. PETER DAMIAN*

Peter Onesti was born in the year 1007 at Ravenna and, having lost his parents when very young, he was left in the charge of a brother in whose house he was treated more like a slave rather than a younger brother.

As soon as Peter was old enough, his brother sent him to tend pigs, where a priest from Ravenna, had pity on the neglected lad and took the responsibility to have him educated.

Peter was sent to school, first at Faenza and then at Parma. Peter proved to be a brilliant student and by the age of 25 he was a professor of great ability. Peter adopted for himself the surname of Damian, in gratitude to Father Damian, who had educated him.

In 1034, Peter Damian joined the Benedictine monks and at the age of 36 he became abbot of Fonte Avellana & remained so until his death 29 years later.

Peter and his friend Hildebrand, the future Pope Gregory VII, strove continually by pen & word to combat the abuses then widespread in the Church. St. Peter Damian is best known for his terrible indictment of the clergy, the "Liber Gomorrhianus" published in 1051.

Pope Stephen X in 1057 insisted, under pain of excommunication that Peter Damian should accept the post of Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. Beside being the administrator of the diocese of Gubbio, he served seven successive Popes with remarkable success on various delicate missions.

St. Peter Damian died in a monastery while the monks were reciting Matins round about him, on 22nd February, 1072 A.D.

FACTS ABOUT INDULGENCES EXTRACTED FROM THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

Indulgences

1471 The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance.

What is an indulgence?

"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints."⁸¹
"An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin."⁸² Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead.

The punishments of sin

1472 To understand this doctrine and practice of the Church, it is necessary to understand that sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives us of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the privation of which is called the "eternal punishment" of sin. On the other hand every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory. This purification frees one from what is called the "temporal punishment" of sin. These two punishments must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin. A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain.⁸³

1473 The forgiveness of sin and restoration of communion with God entail the remission of the eternal punishment of sin, but temporal punishment of sin remains. While patiently bearing sufferings and trials of all kinds and, when the day comes, serenely facing death, the Christian must strive to accept this temporal punishment of sin as a grace. He should strive by works of mercy and charity, as well as by prayer and the various practices of penance, to put off completely the "old man" and to put on the "new man."⁸⁴

In the Communion of Saints

1474 The Christian who seeks to purify himself of his sin and to become holy with the help of God's grace is not alone. "The life of each of God's children is joined in Christ and through Christ in a wonderful way to the life of all the other Christian brethren in the supernatural unity of the Mystical Body of Christ, as in a single mystical person."⁸⁵

1475 In the communion of saints, "a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things."⁸⁶ In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin.

1476 We also call these spiritual goods of the communion of saints the Church's treasury, which is "not the sum total of the material goods which have accumulated during the course of the centuries. On the contrary the 'treasury of the Church' is the infinite value, which can never be exhausted, which Christ's merits have before God. They were offered so that the whole of mankind could be set free from sin and attain communion with the Father. In Christ, the Redeemer himself, the satisfactions and merits of his Redemption exist and find their effficacy."⁸⁷

1477 "This treasury includes as well the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are truly immense, unfathomable, and even pristine in their value before God. In the treasury, too, are the prayers and good works of all the saints, all those who have followed in the footsteps of Christ the Lord and by his grace have made their lives holy and carried out the mission the Father entrusted to them. In this way they attained their own salvation and at the same time cooperated in saving their brothers in the unity of the Mystical Body."⁸⁸

Obtaining indulgence from God through the Church

1478 An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishments due for their sins. Thus the Church does not want simply to come to the aid of these Christians, but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity.⁸⁹

1479 Since the faithful departed now being purified are also members of the same communion of saints, one way we can help them is to obtain indulgences for them, so that the temporal punishments due for their sins may be remitted.

An 18-year-old man, Abdullahi Tasi’u has reportedly committed suicide.

According to Salemgists, Tasi’u took his own life after his father refused to allow him marry the love of his life.

The deceased before his death was an SS3 student of Kafur secondary school.

The source further stated that the teenager’s father told him to be patient and wait till he graduates from secondary school before he will get a wife for him.

The young man became angry and decided to take his life. He called his father and threatened to commit suicide if he fails to get the wife for him.

It was gathered that the young man was discovered in his room after he reportedly drank a poisonous substance, he was rushed to the hospital but was already dead.

Salemgists also learnt that his 16-year-old girlfriend, Hafsat attempted suicide but was unsuccessful following the intervention of family members.

When I started using pen in my primary school, and I made a mistake, I would try hard to erase it before submitting to my teacher.

Sometimes, I used chalk to clean my mistake but it later re-appeared. So I began to use saliva, it worked, but only to leave holes in my books.

My teachers then used to beat me for being outrageously dirty. But all I tried to do was to cover my error.

One day, a kind hearted teacher who loved me so much called me aside and he said, " Anytime you make a mistake, just cross it and move on".

He said further " Trying to erase your mistakes would only damage your book. 

I told him in protest that I don't want people to see my mistake.

My loving teacher laughed and said " Trying to erase your mistake will make more people know about your mess and the stigma is for life".
